Manuwai spreading the wealth

By Stephen Tsai

After signing a five-year, $20 million football contract last year, former University of Hawai'i offensive lineman Vince Manuwai decided to pay it forward.

He made a cash donation to his alma mater, Farrington High School.

He started an education fund for his five children, placing an initial $10,000 contribution in each account.

And he agreed to serve as a guest instructor at this weekend's Hawai'i Football Camp on the UH campus.

At least nine other former UH players — including Nate Ilaoa, Dane Uperesa, Michael Carter, David Maeva, Kelly McGill and Ma'a Tanuvasa — also will be guest coaches at the camp, which runs through next week.

"Life is good right now," said Manuwai, who will begin his fifth season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. "When it's good, everyone should enjoy in it. I'm focused on taking care of my kids, and helping with the little donations I can give."

Two years ago, Manuwai built a house in Jacksonville for $400,000. After signing his new contract, he paid off the mortgage on the Jacksonville home, and now is building a $1.7 million house in Kane'ohe.

Those were improbable purchases for Manuwai, who grew up with little money. He remembered his first NFL training camp in 2003, when he received an envelope. Inside was a check for $265,000.

"I was like, 'Whoa,' " Manuwai recalled. "We always tease the big-time players like Byron (Leftwich, Jacksonville's quarterback). When he gets his check, we always yell: 'Bring the wheelbarrel.' "

The point, Manuwai said he will emphasize to the campers, is "anything is possible."

"I want them to work hard," Manuwai said. "If they do, they'll get an opportunity to go to the next level. We want to help them get there."

That was the reason Maeva, who played in the Canadian Football League, volunteered for the camp. Maeva helped recruit several of the guest coaches.

"Some of us were Rainbows and some of us were Warriors," Maeva said. "The main thing is we represent Hawai'i. Whenever we see 'Hawai'i,' then we want to help."

UH coaches June Jones, George Lumpkin, Rich Miano, Jeff Reinebold, Dan Morrison, Ron Lee, Cal Lee, Dennis McKnight, Wes Suan and Mel deLaura also will serve as instructors.

The clinic is divided into two segments — Saturday and Sunday for ages 5 to 12, and Tuesday through next Friday for ages 13 and older. Both sessions are 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

For ages 5 to 12, the fees are $40 for individuals and $30 each for groups of 10 or more. For the older participants, fees are $75 for individuals and $60 apiece for groups of 15 or more.
