Kaneko fifth at Betsy Rawls event

Honolulu's Ayaka Kaneko shot a 3-over-par 74 yesterday to finish tied for fifth at the American Junior Golfers Association's McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championship at Malvern, Pa.

Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla., shot a 69 and finished at 7-under-par 206 for a five-stroke victory.

Kaneko, a Sacred Hearts senior, finished at 216 in the invitation-only tournament.

The 78-player field featured players from 21 states, Canada and Peru.

In other AJGA tournaments:

  • Paul Shoji of Honolulu shot an even-par 72 and finished tied for 31st at 3-over 147 at the John Deere Classic Junior All-Star at Glynns Creek Golf Course in Columbia, S.C. Alexander Forss of Temecula, Calif., shot a 69 for a two-stroke victory at 137. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes because of inclement weather.

  • Max Bonk of Waimea on the Big Island shot a 4-over 74 and finished tied for 20th at 12-over 224 in the Golf World West Championship at Pleasanton, Calif. Ethan Wang of Honolulu shot 73—229 to finish tied for 32nd. Shane Lebow of Santa Barbara, Calif., won with 73—212.

  • Pono Calip of Pahoa, Hawai'i, shot a 4-over 76 to finish tied for 30th at 14-over 230 at the Hanmi Bank Junior Open at Santa Clarita, Calif. Henry Park of Waikoloa shot a 78 to finish tied for 57th at 238. Rak Cho of Brea, Calif., defeated Jake Sarnoff of Manhattan, Calif., in a playoff. Both finished at 215.

    JUNIOR WORLD

    Five golfers with Hawai'i ties made the cut yesterday for the final round in the boys' 15-17 age division at the Callaway Golf Junior World Golf Championships at Torrey Pines North Course in San Diego.

    Bradley Shigezawa of Honolulu shot a 2-over 74 in the third round and was tied for 14th at 6-over 222. Dylan Frittelli of South Africa shot a 69 and has a seven-stroke lead at 7-under 209.

    Other Hawai'i golfers are: T.J. Kua, Lihu'e, 79—223; Cory Oride, Lihu'e, 74—223; Alex Ching, Ho-nolulu, 77—226 and Chan Kim, formerly of Kaimuki High, 81—227.

    Alex Chu, of Honolulu, shot 80—240 and missed the cut.

    GIRLS 15-17 AT TORREY PINES, SOUTH COURSE; PAR 72

    Leader: Ha-na Jang, Korea, 67—212. Hawai'i golfers: Britney Yada, Hilo, 77—230. Missed cut: Nicole Sakamoto, Honolulu, 76—232; Elyse Okada, Kahului, 77—236; Hayley Young, Ho-nolulu, 75—236; Tamara Surtees, Waikoloa, 78—238; Kelcie Kawano, Kahului, 84—250.
