Baseball: A-Rod hits homer No. 498

Advertiser Staff

NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez hit the 498th home run of his career today, going deep against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to give the Yankees an 18-3 lead.

A-Rod's 34th homer this season was a two-run shot in the sixth inning. He leads the majors in home runs and is two shy of becoming the youngest player to hit 500.

Rodriguez, who turns 32 in five days, began his career in Seattle and went to Texas before he was traded to the Yankees in February 2004. Jimmie Foxx was 32 years, 338 days when he hit his 500th.

A-Rod is 22nd on the career list and fifth among active players, just behind Frank Thomas, who has 501.
