Man dies after trying to rescue son at Kailua beach

Advertiser Staff

A 44-year-old man died at Castle Medical Center this afternoon after he went to the aid of his 12-year-old son in waters off Kailua Beach.

EMS spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the boy was in the water and got into trouble at about 2:30 p.m. The father went into the water to help the boy and ended up struggling himself.

Both had been brought ashore when HFD rescue crews arrived.

The father was taken to Castle, where he was pronounced dead. The boy was taken to the hospital in serious condition, Chelpic said.
