August is just around the corner, and that means it's time for K-Fest.

The Hawaii International Film Festival is celebrating its third annual K-Fest Aug. 24-26; so far, six Korean films are scheduled with the chance for more films to be booked in the next week.

The three-day Korean film festival at the Regal Dole Cannery theaters is the summer festival for HIFF, supplementing its annual fall extravaganza and the now-10-year-old Spring Festival. After its first year's tickets sold out in a matter of days, K-Fest saw attendance nearly doubled its second year.

K-Fest 3 promises to be just as good if not better, with the most recent films from the Korean film industry on tap. Also, Korean stars have been known to make red-carpet appearances at past HIFF events, including Song Kang Ho of "The Host," Lee Byung Hun of "Bittersweet Life," Ha Ji won of "Duelist," Shin Hyun Joon of "Marrying the Mafia" and Rick Yune of "Die Another Day." Talks with several other stars to attend this year's fall festival are under way.

On tap:

'MY TUTOR FRIEND 2'

Junko comes to Korea as an exchange student to learn the language. Upon arrival, she goes to a guesthouse with a friendly owner, delicious food and her own private furnished room. There's nothing more she could ever want until, to her horror, she finds out her room belongs to the owner's son, Jongman. Junko threatens to pack up her bags and leave, but Jongman's father begs her to stay, enticing her with a package deal of Jongman's room, complete with Korean language lessons from none other than Jongman himself. There's also George, the handsome goofball foreigner, and Poongi and Moonran, who both fight for Junko's love.

'MY SON'

Lee Gang Sik is serving a life sentence for murder. For the past 15 years, he has been on his best behavior, and now his wish has finally come true: Gang Sik has been granted a one-day leave to visit his family. As the day draws closer, he is overcome with both excitement and nervousness. There is so much he wants to say to his teenage son (Ryu Deok Hwan), whom he hasn't seen since incarceration, but the feeling isn't exactly reciprocated. Forced to grow up at an early age, his son has had a tough life, taking care of his troubled mother on his own, and in his eyes, he sees him as a criminal. How can Gang Sik make up for 15 years in just a day's time?

'FOR HOROWITZ'

Ji Su once had dreams of becoming a famous pianist and was determined to succeed, but she now teaches young children how to play. One day she discovers Gyung Min, a boy with exceptional talent. Ji Su throws all of her focus into improving his raw skills, projecting her own desires, for fame and fortune. But when Ji Su enters the young lad into his first competition, all does not go as planned. It is then revealed that Gyung Min carries with him a secret, one that will change Ji Su's life forever.

'MIRACLE ON FIRST STREET'

Pil Je (Lim Chang Jung) is raising a fuss with the entire neighborhood and trying all he can to drive the residents away so his boss and his people can build a new complex. Most people tend to be scared of Pil Je, but Myeong Ran (Ha Ji Won) is not too impressed. An aspiring boxer, Myeong Ran isn't scared by Pil Je one bit. She's starting to look as menacing, too, but as he gets to know her and the locals, Pil Je senses himself changing, changing.

'THE PERFECT COUPLE'

Running after a pickpocket, Detective Kang Jae Hyuk finds out how problematic journalist Choi Soo Jin (Hyun Young) can be when the fish skewer she's eating magically ends up stuck in his abdomen. Is it destiny, love at first sight? Not quite. But the two start to form a reluctant but formidable alliance: He's good-looking, a great fighter and a good detective; she's determined to get the story. Together, they make a perfect couple.

'VOICE OF A MURDERER'

Based on a real abduction that happened in South Korea in 1991, it's the story of the only son of famous news anchor, Han Kyung-bae, who disappeared without a trace. Soon, the kidnapper calls the 9-year-old boy's mother, Oh Jisun, demanding a large ransom. The police assign veteran detective Kim Wook-jung to the case and assemble a top-notch task force under his command. However, the kidnapper constantly outwits the police traps and keeps calling the parents with yet another instruction for the money drop. The only clue the police and the parents have is the kidnapper's voice recorded on the tape. The parents become restless and angry as days turns into weeks, and one day, when the kidnapper calls Han Kyung-bae with another set of instructions, he turns the situation completely around and demands a direct confrontation.
