ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Juicy cocktail creations

Advertiser Staff

It's summertime, and the fruit stands are piled high with fresh tropical fruits — mango, papaya, mountain apple, lychee, pineapple and guava. No better time to try something new and create your own fresh-fruit cocktails with these in-season delicacies.

  • Make a sweet Hawaiian sangria for your next cookout by combining your favorite bottle of wine, about 2 ounces of Grand Marnier and a splash of soda; then add diced mountain apples, lychee and a squeeze of lime.

  • Shake two parts vodka to one part guava juice, and you have yourself a sweet and glamorous guavatini.

  • Planning an upcoming event? Concoct your own fruit-infused liquor by dicing fruit and letting it sit in the liquor for five to seven days. Be creative and experiment with new pairings: Try mango-infused rum or pineapple-infused vodka.

    SKIN STORIES

In theory, Chris Nieratko, an early member of the "Jackass" crew, writes skin-flick reviews for Vice magazine. In reality, his reviews for Vice are never straight-ahead, Roger-Ebert-of-the-XXX-world critiques. They're more likely to be sordid — and detailed — personal tales. Intrigued? Check out "Skinema," a collection of Nieratko essays about his real-life experiments with adults-only, not always legally sanctioned experiences that can't be referenced in a family newspaper. Or get the lowdown straight from the source when Nieratko shows slides, tells stories and signs copies of "Skinema" at 'A'ala Park Boardshop, 185 N. King St., at 8 p.m. on Friday. Call 585-8538.
