The Heisman Trophy campaign for Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan kicks off tomorrow with the Western Athletic Conference Football Media Preview in San Jose — a promotional stop that should boost the profile of the school and league.

Brennan will take a break tomorrow as guest coach for the Elite 11 Camp in Southern California to travel to San Jose for interviews with national media. He returns to the camp tomorrow night.

"I'm excited to go up there," Brennan said. "I've never done it before, so it's a new experience. Obviously it will be a chance to let people know what our team has been doing this summer and where we stand and what we plan on doing this year."

Seventeen other WAC players and all nine head coaches will attend the Preview, which opens with a dinner tonight.

A hundred copies of "A Colt Following," a DVD promoting Brennan as a Heisman candidate, will be distributed tomorrow. KITV sports director Robert Kekaula edited the DVD.

"From what I've heard, when people talk about other DVDs, it's put together really well," said Brennan, who has watched previews. "It's really well done. I wanted something simple, but they took the torch and ran with it. It's cool. It's good for the school. It shows how much the school wants to take care of the players and promote them. I'm excited."

Brennan said he is looking forward to meeting opposing players in an informal setting.

"I'm really more curious about what other teams out there in the WAC think of themselves," Brennan said. "I know how everyone talks about how we have an easy schedule this year."

The Warriors will play 12 of an NCAA-allowable 13 games this year. Two of the opponents are Division I-AA teams that each have 22 fewer scholarship players than the Warriors.

"People are expecting a lot, obviously, because our schedule is not that tough," Brennan said. "They're not going to give us a big margin for error."

Brennan added: "We watch every week how a one-win football team takes an undefeated team to the wire, and sometimes upsets them. It's going to be a tough season, no matter how you look at it. You never know how injuries are going to take. We need to take care of business either way. We need to focus on winning every week. We have to capitalize and take advantage of opportunities and set out to do something big and win football games."

FORMER BRENNAN TEAMMATE UH-BOUND

Brennan's Mater Dei High School teammate, cornerback Camron Carmona, is joining the Warriors as a non-scholarship player.

Carmona, who is 5 feet 10 and 180 pounds, turned down offers from Division II schools in the East.

"I kind of based my decision on him staying," Carmona said, referring to Brennan's decision to return to UH for his senior season. "I didn't want to go back East and play in the cold weather. I visited here, and I felt this is where I want to be."

Carmona played last season at Fullerton Community College. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
