Pyewacket close to finish line

Pyewacket is expected to arrive in Hawai'i between 8 to 11 a.m. today and be the first yacht to complete the 44th biennial Transpacific Yacht Race, which is 2,560.5 miles.

The finish line is off Diamond Head. Boats left Los Angeles on July 9, 12 and 15.

Pyewacket is skippered by Roy Pat Disney and Gregg Hendrick.

Reinrag2, of Division 4, remains in first overall on corrected time handicap.


GOLF

CHIARELLA IN FIFTH PLACE

Alex Chiarella of Makawao shot an even-par 72 and is in fifth place in the boys 12-13 age division Optimist International Junior Golf Championships yesterday at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Chiarella, who completed 16 holes, trails leader Akarinth Addison of Thailand by four strokes. Addison also completed 16 holes.

Other golfers from Hawai'i in the division are tied for 67th at 7-over: Aaron Kunitomo of Lahaina (through 17), Skye Inakoshi of Honolulu (15) and Jonah Fonacier of Mililani (14).

In girls 14-15, Rae-Lyn Morikawa of Lihue is tied for 17th at 7-over; and Kelli Oride of Lihue is tied for 24th at 8-over. Soo Jin Yang of South Korea leads at even-par.

In boys 14-15, Alika Bell of Kane'ohe is tied for 74th at 6-over; and Michael Fan of Pearl City is tied for 109th at 13-over. Zakry Akagi-Bustin of Wahiawa is at even-par through three holes. Myles Lewis of Metairie, La., leads at 3-under through nine holes.

In girls 12-13, Alina Ching of Honolulu is tied for 16th at 8-over. She is 12 strokes behind leader Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand.

In girls 10-11, Kimberly Miyamoto of Kahului is tied for 18th at 9-over through 12 holes. Thailand's Ariya leads at even-par through 15 holes.

TANAKA LEADS BY TWO

Reyn Tanaka shot an even-par 72 to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the 'Ewa Beach Championship at 'Ewa Beach Golf Club.

Bryan Edwards, Christian Akau and Shannon Tanoue are in second of the Amatour Hawai'i event.

The final round starts today at 11:40 a.m.


BASEBALL

MILILANI PONY 13 LOSES

Upland, Calif., routed Mililani, 12-4, in the P.O.N.Y. Pony 13 Western Regional yesterday at Fullerton, Calif.

Micah Kitaoka and Travis Shaw each had two hits for Mililani, which plays Multby, Wash., today.


SOFTBALL

MILILANI-WAIPI'O WINS

Jonelle Visitacion and Jaslyn Dumlao combined for nine strikeouts as Mililani-Waipi'o beat East Anaheim, 5-3, yesterday to advance to the final of the Bobby Sox Tournament of Champions at La Mirada, Calif.
