Desert news: The Luxor hotel on the Las Vegas Strip has announced that it has launched a multiphase renovation program. The casino floor is being updated with a water theme, and other phases of construction will include creation of nightclubs and restaurants and the launch of a new Cirque du Soleil production. Altogether, there will be five new bars (one, the Aurora Lounge, is now open) and three restaurants. The Restore Pool Lounge, which opened this month, offers an outdoor spa-like atmosphere with cabanas and pampering around the pool. Luxor is partnering with Cirque du Soleil to reinvent the traditional magic show with illusionist Criss Angel. This show will open in summer, 2008.

Palace chat: A reminder that Bette Midler will replace Celine Dion in February 2008 as the resident performer at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The Divine Miss M. will premiere Feb. 20 for five nights weekly. Tickets: $95-$250. Expect a minimum of 100 concerts each year for two years. The Colosseum will go dark between Dion's grand finale Dec. 15 and Midler's first show.

Elton John will continue to perform 50 shows a year at the 4,100-seat Colosseum. That leaves room for one additional artist. Speculation continues that it may be Cher.
