Deadline Thursday for Maui student bus payments

The Maui News

WAILUKU — State education officials are urging families not to wait until the last minute to apply for student bus transportation for the 2007-08 school year.

New rules require payment for student bus passes — at school offices — before the start of the school year.

Only about half of the students who rode the bus last school year had applied as of last week, The Maui News reported. Payment is due Thursday.

Prices range from $11.25 per quarter for a one-way pass to $85.50 for an annual two-way pass.

Bus pass application booklets are available online for Maui County students at www.mauidoe.com.

"We encourage parents who have not yet picked up bus passes for children to go to their school today," said Aaron Kimura, the Hawaii Department of Education's manager of student transportation services. "Those who wait until the last minute are going to overwhelm our school offices."

Even students entitled to free bus passes are required to apply for them and present them to their bus drivers for each ride.

The first day of school for most public school students will be July 30, July 31 or Aug. 1.

The dates vary depending on whether the school uses its professional development waiver days at the beginning of the year.
