Federal minimum wage hike won't affect Hawai'i rate

Advertiser Staff

The federal minimum wage rises tomorrow to $5.85 an hour, but the increase will not affect workers in Hawai'i, which has a higher minimum wage.

The 70-cent federal minimum wage increase is the first since 1997, when the minimum was raised by 40 cents to $5.15 an hour. In May, President Bush signed legislation to increase the minimum wage 70 cents each summer until 2009.

Hawai'i's minimum wage was hiked to $7.25 an hour in January from the previous rate of $6.75. Where federal and state laws have different minimum wage rates, the higher standard applies.
