Baseball: Mets' Martinez resumes pitching after break

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Pedro Martinez resumed pitching to hitters after a 19-day hiatus, throwing 50 pitches today in a simulated game against New York Mets minor leaguers.Martinez had been off on a planned break since throwing 50 pitches in a simulated game on July 3. The 35-year-old right-hander threw 60 pitches in a bullpen session last Thursday.
He had surgery Oct. 5 to repair a torn rotator cuff, and threw to batters on June 26 for the first time after the operation. The three-time Cy Young Award winner, 9-8 with a 4.48 ERA last year, hopes to return to the Mets next month.
