Okinawan group seeking donations for shelter families

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii United Okinawa Association is organizing a picnic this Saturday for families residing at 'Ohana Ola, a transitional shelter in Wai'anae.

The picnic will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kahumana Community Center in Wai'anae.

There are about 47 families living at 'Ohana Ola — approximately 100 adults and about 130 minor children, most of them under the age of 12.

HUOA volunteers will prepare and serve a lunch of chili and rice, hot dogs and buns, fruit, juice, shave ice and andagi.

They are also organizing picnic games with an Okinawan flavor for the adults and keiki and will treat the residents to an Okinawan shishi mai lion dance performance.

"We want to share some Uchinanchu aloha with others in Hawai'i who are down on their luck at the moment. Hopefully, it will bring a smile to the faces of the children and some relief to the adults," HUOA Executive Director Jane Serikaku said in a news release.

The HUOA welcomes donations of items to fill "Family Baskets" for the residents — items such as dishwash detergent and laundry soap; toilet tissue, paper towels and facial tissue; and linens such as towels, pillow cases and sheets. Prizes for the games are also welcome, as are monetary donations so that items for the family baskets can be purchased.

Checks can be made payable to HUOA (please note on your check: 'Ohana Ola) and mailed to HUOA, 94-587 Ukee St., Waipahu, HI 96797. Donations can also be dropped off at the HUOA's office at the Hawaii Okinawa Center.

Last year, HUOA volunteers held a similar picnic for residents of the Weinberg Village transitional housing project in Waimanalo.
