Applications for Nuuanu catfish season starts today

Starting today, anglers can apply for the summer catfish season at Nu'uanu Reservoir that begins Aug. 25.Applications for entry fishing cards can be picked up at the Department of Land and Natural Resource's Division of Aquatic Resources at 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 330, and from various licensing agents on O'ahu. Blank applications will not be mailed.
The deadline for submitting applications to DLNR is 4 p.m. Aug. 10. A drawing will then be held to assign each cardholder a fishing date and time.
A valid State of Hawai'i freshwater game fishing license and an entry fishing card are required.
DLNR interim chairman Allan Smith said the largest catfish caught at the dam so far measured 22 pounds and 35 inches long.
Processed entry cards sent back to applicants will indicate the date and time that fishers may enter the reservoir. Entry will be strictly limited to those who have appropriate entry cards. Anglers must participate during the period they are assigned to fish. There will be no makeup periods or refunds, the DLNR said. Fishing will continue on consecutive weekends until all anglers with assigned fishing times have been accommodated.

Each fishing day will be divided into four-hour fishing periods: a morning session from 7 to 11 a.m., and an afternoon session from noon to 4 p.m. For further information, call DLNR's Division of Aquatic Resources on O'ahu at 587-0100.
