Traffic signals installed at Moiliili, Kalihi intersections

Advertiser Staff

Two traffic signals — one at the intersection of South Beretania and Kaialiu streets in Mo'ili'ili and another at North School and Leilani streets in Kalihi — will begin operating tomorrow morning.

The $298,000 project at the busy intersection at South Beretania and Kaialiu streets near Star Market included installing the traffic signals and improving curb ramps.

Traffic signals at the intersection at North School and Leilani streets were installed through a $371,000 project to improve the safety of pedestrians, particularly children walking to and from school.

Both traffic signal intersections employ "mass arms," which allow the signals to hang over the intersection for better visibility.

"These are examples of the city's efforts to improve pedestrian safety at heavily traveled intersections in town," Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann said in a news release.

"Combined with our project to install countdown pedestrian signals across the island, re-striping and continuing public education and police enforcement, we expect to make headway in making our streets that much safer for everyone."
