NFL: Bills sign draftee, Boise State tight end

Associated Press

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Tight end Derek Schouman signed today with the Buffalo Bills, who also claimed free agent receiver Jonathan Smith.

Schouman, a seventh-round selection, was a four-year starter at Boise State. He's the third of the Bills seven draft picks to sign with the team.

Smith was released by New England on Thursday after playing two games with the Patriots last season. He was originally taken by Buffalo in the seventh round in 2004 and played two seasons with the Bills before being released a week before the start of the 2006 season.

Smith was primarily used as a punt returner with the Bills, averaging 13.2 yards. He also returned one punt for a touchdown. In his career, Smith has eight receptions for 77 yards and one touchdown.

Buffalo also released two undrafted rookie free agents, linebacker Larry Edwards and receiver Johnny Quinn.
