Akagi-Bustin in tie for fifth in junior golf

On a day when lightning caused several delays, Zakry Akagi-Bustin of Wahiawa was even-par through six holes and tied for fifth in the boys 14-15 age division of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships yesterday at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Akagi-Bustin completed his first round earlier in the day, finishing with a 2-under-par 70.

Alika Bell of Kane'ohe was in a tie for 32nd at 6-over through eight holes of his second round. He opened with a 78.

Michael Fan of Pearl City was in a tie for 106th at 18-over through seven holes. He opened with an 85.

Leader Jorge Fernandez Valdez of Argentina was 3-under through seven holes of his second round after opening with a 69.

The second round will be completed this morning, with the third round to follow.

In other divisions:

In boys 12-13, Alex Chiarella of Makawao shot 3-over 75 and is tied for ninth at 2-over 146. Aaron Kunitomo of Lahaina shot 76 and is tied for 46th at 11-over 155. Skye Inakoshi of Honolulu shot 81 and is tied for 73rd at 18-over 162, along with Jonah Fonacier of Mililani, who shot 83. Akarinth Addison of Thailand leads with 69—136.

In boys 10-11, Richard Hattori of Honolulu shot 6-over 78 and is tied for 12th after the opening round. La'akeaikawaiola Warren of Ele'ele shot 83 and is tied for 33rd, and George Corpuz of Kapolei shot 84 and is tied for 39th. Jim Liu of Smithtown, N.Y. leads with 2-under 70.

In girls 14-15, Kelli Oride of Lihu'e was even-par through 12 holes and tied for 10th at 8-over. Rae-Lyn Morikawa of Lihu'e was 6-over through nine holes and tied for 23rd at 14-over. Leader Soo Jin Yang of South Korea was 3-under through 12 holes and 4-under overall.

In girls 12-13, Alina Ching of Honolulu shot 2-over 74 and is 10th at 10-over 154. Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand leads with 73—141.

In girls 10-11, Kimberlie Miyamoto of Kahului, Maui, shot 20-over 92 is 24th at 37-over 181. Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand leads with 71—143.


MORE GOLF

HAYASHI, PHENGSAVATH LEADING PRO-PRO EVENT

Kevin Hayashi and Joe Phengsavath lead by two strokes after the first round of the Aloha Section PGA Prolink Solutions & Srixon Pro-Pro Championship.

Hayashi (Mauna Kea Resort) and Phengsavath (Aloha Section PGA Apprentice at Mid-Pacific Country Club) shot a 7-under-par 63 on the Kaanapali Golf Resort. They had one bogey and eight birdies, including five on the back nine.

"It was a beautiful round today," Phengsavath said, "Kevin is great at adapting to the strength of the course — no matter what it is, he always has his game."

Kirk Nelson and Brian Sasada of the Makena Golf Resort shot 65.

The final round is today.

"We're planning on being aggressive on the front nine to stay ahead," Hayashi said.


BASEBALL

MILILANI PONY 13S RALLY FOR 3-1 VICTORY

Lawrence Chew Jr. pitched a three-hitter, Soo Bin Kang scored two runs and Wade Taoka drove in one as Mililani rallied past Multby, Wash., 3-1, yesterday in the PONY Pony 13 West Zone Tournament at Fullerton, Calif.

Chew, Kang and Taoka each batted 1 for 3.


RUNNING

CHAMBERLAIN, HO WIN KAILUA BEACH RUN

Matthew Chamberlain won the men's race and Lauren Ho finished first among the women in yesterday's Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club Kailua Beach Run.

Chamberlain finished the 4 1/2-mile course in 30 minutes, 48 seconds. Ho clocked 33:07.


TRIATHLON

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR TINMAN TRIATHLON

Volunteers are still needed for Sunday's Tinman Triathlon.

Event organizers are seeking people to help as course marshals, setup and breakdown crews and helping at the bike/run transition corral.
