Oahu Whole Foods to feature 3 Hawaii-based growers

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's first Whole Foods Market, a natural and organic foods supermarket, will feature three Hawai'i-based growers, the company announced today.

Ma'o Organics, Poamoho Organic Produce and Hamakua Springs Country Farms will provide locally grown produce for the 26,000-square-foot store in Kahala Mall.

"This is exactly the kind of opportunity we have been waiting for to showcase our locally-grown produce," said Gary Maunakea-Forth of Ma'o Farm in Wai'anae. "Whole Foods Market is well known for being tremendously supportive of local growers, and we are so pleased to have them come to Hawai'i. This will be a great opportunity for all of Hawai'i's growers."

According to Michael Besancon, president of the southern Pacific region of Whole Foods Market, about 75 percent of the chain's produce comes from family farms.

"The quality and diversity of Hawai'i's fruits and vegetables, particularly organic, is incredible," Besancon said in a news release. "Our new Hawai'i'-based grower partners are an invaluable part of the Whole Foods Market family."

The company is seeking additional local growers and food producers to partner with.
