WaveRunner purchased to monitor reefs around Maui

Advertiser Staff

The Department of Land and Natural Resources' Division of Aquatic Resources Maui office recently purchased a Yamaha WaveRunner, which will be used as part of a new monitoring program designed to assess near-shore marine resources in waters surrounding Maui.

"The public will be seeing DLNR personnel using this jet-ski in shallow near-shore locations to do fish surveys around North Kihei, Makena, Olowalu, North Ka'anapali, Honokowai, Kahana, Waihe'e, Waiehu, Kahului and Pa'ia," Allan Smith, DLNR interim chairperson, said in a released statement.

Surveys have begun at the 10 established sites and will be conducted four times a year at each location into the future.

All of these areas are ocean resource management areas where public use of personal watercraft near shore is not generally allowed. The division's survey personal watercraft will be clearly identified with "DLNR Research."
