No rescue needed in Haiku 'Stairway' hikers incident

Advertiser Staff

A light flashing early this morning along the slope of the Stairway to Heaven in Ha'iku prompted an area resident to call police and report the possibility of hikers in distress.

A Honolulu Fire Department helicopter crew responding to the 5:30 a.m. report found hikers along the steep trail of nearly 4,000 steps, but the hikers indicated that they were not in trouble.

"They were using a flash for photos, not signaling distress," said Capt. Terry Seelig, HFD spokesman.

The trail is closed to the public because of the poor condition of the steps and rail. Still, hikers sometimes test the trail.
