Muliwai trail reopens; Puu Oo trail remains closed

Advertiser Staff

Muliwai trail on the Big Island is reopening today after being closed since Wednesday as a safety precaution due to heavy rains forecast for the island from tropical depression Cosme.

For camping permits for Waimanu campground or information on current trail conditions, please call the Hilo Department of Land and Natural Resources Forestry and Wildlife office at (808) 974-4221.

The DLNR also said yesterday that the Puu 'O'o Trail remains closed due to continuing volcanic activity in the vicinity of Kilauea and Puu 'O'o volcanoes.

The Puu 'O'o trail, within the Kahauale'a Natural Area Reserve, is also commonly known as Kahauale'a Trail and Captain's Trail. The trail head is on Volcano Road (Highway 11) approximately at the 20 mile marker in Glenwood. A trail closure sign is posted at the trailhead.
