Pilot shortage affecting Northwest's flight schedule

Advertiser Staff

Northwest Airlines Corp. is trimming an additional 1 percent of its August U.S. schedule and hiring as

many as 350 pilots because of a crew shortage that has forced flight cancellations, Bloomberg News reported.

The news service said Chief Executive Officer Doug Steenland told employees of the new reductions in a memo yesterday in which he said the Eagan,

Minnesota-based carrier had to cancel 109 flights last weekend. Northwest said on June 29 that it would cut 3 percent of its U.S.

operations next month after a pilot shortage that forced it to

scrap flights and stranded thousands of travelers.
