Public charter middle school on Maui gets approval

The Maui News

WAILUKU — The Maui Planning Commission granted approval Tuesday for a public charter middle school to operate in the Maui Research & Technology Center, The Maui News reported.

The new Kihei Science Technology Engineering and Math Middle School will accommodate 48 students in the 6th and 7th grades. Developed by the staff at Kihei Charter School, the middle school campus will offer a curriculum based on science and math with the intention of giving opportunities to the students to interact with professions involved in scientific research and technology development at the Maui R&T Park.

The commission approved a five-year special accessory use permit for the charter school to move into the R&T center. The new middle school is expected to open for classes on Aug. 1.
