PAHOA
Fine, prison for welfare fraud

Advertiser Staff

A Pahoa woman convicted of welfare fraud has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to repay $83,200 to the state, prosecutors said.

Herbegail Lyman, 30, was convicted of first-degree theft in the case, and was already on probation for forgery and credit card theft.

An investigation by the state Department of Human Services found that Lyman fraudulently obtained more than $83,000 in welfare benefits from 1995 to 2004 by hiding more than $49,000 in an interest-bearing deposit contract with an insurance company.

Anyone with information about possible welfare fraud can call the DHS investigations office at 808-933-8899.
