Kono, Kim set up quarterfinal showdown in match play

Advertiser Staff

Kimberly Kim and Stephanie Kono set up a quarterfinal showdown later today by winning their round of 16 matches at the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship in Lakewood, Wash., earlier this morning.

Kim, a former Big Island resident now living in Arizona, beat Mary Michael Maggio of Conway, Ark., 2 and 1 in their round of 16 match.

Kono, a Punahou School student, needed 20 holes to dispatch Maria Uribe of Colombia. Kono parred the 20th hole, a par 4, and Uribe bogeyed it.

Ayaka Kaneko, also from Honolulu, defeated Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., the No. 3 seed who knocked off Kim in this year's Women's Public Links, 1 up, in her round of 16 match. Kaneko's opponent in the quarterfinals is Sue Kim of Canada. Kim beat Tiffany Lua, Rowland Heights, Calif., 1 up in the round of 16.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for later today, with the semifinals set for tomorrow and the final on Saturday.
