Honolulu's Michelle Wie, looking to break out of a yearlong slump, shot a 1-over-par 73 today at the Evian Masters in Evian-Les-Baines, France, and said she was upbeat after her round.

"I'm definitely on the road to recovery," Wie said. "I'm swinging much better and I made some birdies. I take so many positives from this round."

The 17-year-old Wie, who has gone 24 consecutive rounds in which she shot par or worse, had two birdies, a double bogey and a bogey in a somewhat steady round.

She birdied the sixth and seventh holes to make the turn at 2-under 34. But she double-bogeyed the par-4 12th and bogeyed the par-3 14th.

Wie's last round under par came in the final round of last year's Evian Masters in which she shot 68.

Hampered by injuries to both wrists, Wie's game has been in freefall since. She has withdrawn in two of her previous three tournaments, including last month's U.S. Women's Open. In the tournament she did complete — the LPGA Championship — Wie finished last by 10 shots.

Americans Pat Hurst and Brittany Lincicome and Eun-hee Ji of South Korea topped the leaderboard in a three-way tie after the first round. The three set the pace with 6-under 66.

Wie's playing partner, Morgan Pressel, recorded two birdies over the last three holes and shot a 1-over 73. Her round included a two-shot penalty.

Ai Miyazato, Juli Inkster and Gloria Park also shot 73.
