UH could become national disaster training center

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i would become a National Disaster Preparedness Training Center for the Department of Homeland Security through a report approved by the U.S. Senate on Thursday.

If approved by the House of Representatives, the measure would go to President Bush to sign into law.

"The University of Hawai'i is the premier center of education and research in the area of natural disaster analysis and risk reduction," said U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawai'i), who requested that UH be included in the provision. "No university is better suited to prepare first responders for what they will face in the wake (of) natural disasters. I am proud that UH can contribute its expertise to this important nationwide mission."
