Hawaii students in National High School Rodeo Finals

Nineteen Hawaii high school students are trying out their rodeo skills against 1,547 other students at the National High School Finals Rodeo is Springfield, Illinois. They are competing against high school students from 46 other states, Canadian Provinces and Australia

The Hawaii youth competing in this National Rodeo are Hawaii state champions, based on points earned from rodeos that began in September 2006 and culminated with the Hawaii State Rodeo Finals held last month in Waimea on the Big Island.

Competitive Events include Barrel Racing, Breakaway Roping, Bull Riding, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Steer Wrestling, Tie-Down Roping, Team Roping and Cutting. In addition, Kristyn Vasconcelles, the reining Hawaii High School Rodeo Queen, is competing to be the National High School Rodeo Queen.

Competing from the Big Island is Cody Cabral who is the current Hawaii State All-Around Cowboy, along with Dale Benevides, Boots Kaapana, Cheyenne Gaspar, Daphnee Joseph, David Cazimero, Keola Loando, Keri Ogden, Raisha Grace, Wesley Kauai, Syd Zoll and Rolland Alcoran.

Kauai cowboys and cowgirls include Gavin Shimogawa, Kalani Grace, Kelli Carveiro, Kristyn Vasconcelles, and Sumiko Falque.

Representing Oahu is Marin Lorne.

Tihani Kekiwi is competing from the Island of Maui.

Statewide sponsors for the Hawaii team traveling to the mainland include Coldwell Banker Day-Lum Properties, King's Trail Rides O'Kona, and Mattos Electric from the Big Island, Henry's Equipment Rentals & Sales, Latigo Construction and the Napier Family from Oahu, and the Nobu Higa Family from Maui. In addition, First Hawaii Bank, the Hapa Foundation and the LeBurta Atherton Foundation have contributed to the Hawaii Rodeo Team.

This National Finals Rodeo is deemed the largest Rodeo in the world because it has the greatest number of competitors of any known rodeo. In addition to the 1,547 students in competition over 10,000 spectators attend the rodeos daily.
