Hawaii soldier in murder case reportedly under orders
Associated Press
ATLANTA An Army document says a Hawai'i-based soldier charged with murdering a detainee in Iraq shot the man under orders from a higher-ranking Army sergeant, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported today.Spc. Christopher P. Shore of Winder, Ga., and Sgt. 1st Class Trey A. Corrales of San Antonio, Texas, have been charged with premeditated murder in the June 23 slaying of an unidentified man near the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq.
The newspaper reported it obtained the Army document charging the soldiers by e-mail from Iraq. The charge sheet says Corrales shot the detainee before "directing his subordinate, Specialist Christopher P. Shore, to then shoot the detainee."
The soldiers' battalion commander, Lt. Col. Michael Browder, was relieved of his command in connection with the investigation. The military has said Browder is not a suspect and has not been charged.
Shore, 25, and Corrales, 34, are assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, which is part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Schofield Barracks.
The military's Task Force Lightning in Iraq did not immediately reply to an e-mail request for the document by The Associated Press.
The Army charge sheet says both soldiers shot the detainee multiple times with their rifles and accuses both of "premeditated murder," the Atlanta newspaper reported.
Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, both Shore and Corrales could receive the death penalty if convicted by a court-martial.
Shore's mother, Debra Kessler, said she did not want to comment when the AP reached her by phone today.
