Wie shoots under par with birdie on 18th at Evian
Advertiser Staff
Wie, a 17-year-old from Honolulu, is at even-par 144 for the tournament, and will make the cut.
She is tied for 28th place with nine other players, seven shots behind co-leaders Diana D'Alessio and Jin Joo Hong, both at 7-under through two rounds.
"I'm very happy," Wie said. "That's my first round under par this year. It's a bit of a breakthrough.
"I had one stupid hole the 7th where I had a double bogey, but it was a very positive round. I just need to hole more putts."
Wie had five birdies and two bogeys along with her double-bogey in today's round.
It was big step for the Punahou grad, who had withdrawn from the past two tournaments she had entered, the Ginn Tribute and the U.S. Women's Open, citing recurring problems with a wrist injury.
In the other women's tournament she entered, the LPGA championship, she finished 10 shots back.
Wie finished second a year ago at the Evian Masters. It was also the last tournament where she had a round that was under par.
Her biggest boost today came when she refused to let the double-bogey on the par-5 7th hole faze her.
Wie responded with three straight birdies to get back to 1-under for the day.
She dropped to even par with a bogey on the 14th hole, but finished strong with the birdie on the par-5 18th to break her streak of over-par rounds.
