NFL: 49ers sign third-round pick, DE McDonald

Advertiser Staff

The San Francisco 49ers announced yesterday that they have signed third-round draft pick Florida defensive end Ray McDonald.

McDonald was the second of two third-round picks in 2007. Terms of the contract were not announced by the team.

McDonald, 6 feet 3 and 282 pound, saw action in 46 games for the Florida Gators with 36 starts. He collected 137 tackles, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.

McDonald became the first freshman defensive lineman to start 12 games in a season (2003) and was only the fourth defensive lineman in school history to start as a freshman in the season opener.

With the signing of McDonald, the 49ers now have eight of their nine draft picks signed after inking offensive tackle Joe Staley (first round), wide receiver Jason Hill (third), linebacker Jay Moore (fourth), safety Dashon Goldson (fourth), defensive tackle Joe Cohen (fourth) and cornerback Tarell Brown (fifth) and running back Thomas Clayton (6th).

Only their top pick, Mississippii linebacker Patrick Willis remains unsigned.
