Honolulu's Eric Abbott and Danny Ching, of Redondo Beach, Calif., finished last in the eight-team K2 500-meter kayaking final at the Pan American Games today at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Jesus Valdez and Manuel Cortina of Mexico won the gold medal in 1 minute, 36.386 seconds. Abbott and Ching, of the United States, finished in 1:43.234.

The United States failed to medal in the canoe or kayak competition.

"This was a huge eye-opener for us," Abbott said. "It's a lot different to race internationally; the competition is really tough. There is a lot we need to work on but, we're young and can make huge improvements."
