Honolulu Shriner's Hospital donating items to Pohnpei

HONOLULU — Healthcare in Pohnpei, Micronesia, will be improving with a donation of medical supplies from Shriner's Hospital. The Honolulu facility is going through a major renovation and is donating 15 hospital beds, tables, furniture, wheelchairs, walkers, and surgical supplies.

"We are breaking ground on a new hospital next month and have to get rid of a large volume of extra medical equipment. Since we service hundreds of children from Micronesia, we are glad the items are finding a new home in Pohnpei," says Shriner's Environmental Services Manager, Greg Wolf.

The supplies will be shipped to Pohnpei with the help of Matson Navigation Co.

"Matson is pleased and proud to be part of this effort to assist the people of Pohnpei." says Matson Senior Vice President Gary North. "We know these items will be a great benefit for this island community."

Many of the estimated 12,000 Micronesians residing in Hawaii are receiving medical treatment. "Those suffering through illness come here not by choice, but by necessity," says Reach out Pacific (REPAC) President, Glenn Wakai, "This collaboration between Shriners and Matson is aimed at improving the health care system in Micronesia so residents there can live comfortably on their home islands."
