Tennis: Dancevic bounces Roddick in Indy

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS - Frank Dancevic used 15 aces to eliminate an ailing Andy Roddick 6-4, 7-6 (1) today and advance in the final of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships, where he'll face Russian Dimitry Tursunov.

Roddick, a two-time winner of the tournament and the top seed, struggled with his first serve against Dancevic, and landed just 47 percent (37-of-78). Roddick said he began to feel ill in the first set, bothered by what he called "a stomach bug or something."

"I was frustrated. I didn't have much to give. I served poorly today; I served poorly all week," said Roddick, a winner in two previous matches against Dancevic.

Dancevic, from Canada and ranked 109th in the world, said he was stunned to be a finalist.

"I was dazed as a semifinalist. Now, I'm a finalist," he said. "Wow!"

Roddick had difficulty getting to Dancevic's serves in Saturday's first semifinal, and when he came to the net, Dancevic fired passing shots past him. Dancevic won the last six points of the tiebreaker, including a double fault by Roddick.

Tursunov, the No. 3 seed, reached his first Indianapolis finals by stopping first-time semifinalist James Querrey, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

Earlier Saturday, the unseeded Querrey fired a career-high 34 aces as he eliminated defending champion James Blake, the second seed, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4) in a rain-delayed quarterfinal match.

I didn't expect myself to serve as well as I did this morning, but I still served pretty well," said Querrey, who had 10 aces against Tursunov.

Tursunov defeated Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-1, 6-4, in the other quarterfinal match that had been rained out on Friday.
