Hilo tops California team in Ripken event

Kolten Yamaguchi batted 3 for 4 with a solo homer and Hilo scored three runs each in the second, third and fourth innings in an 11-6 victory over host Rohnert Park, Calif., yesterday at the Cal Ripken (12-younger) Pacific Southwest Regional.

Kian Kurokawa pitched a complete game for Hilo, and Kean Wong and Dean Hosaka each had two hits. Yamaguchi's homer led off the second.

Hilo, 1-1 in the tournament, will play Taylorsville, Utah, today at 6 a.m. (Hawai'i time).

Hilo is the defending Ripken World Series champions.

Mustang (ages 9-10): W.S. Hart of California banged out nine hits and benefitted from seven errors in an 11-1 rout of Windward at the West Zone Tournament at Chino Hills, Calif.

Kekai Rios batted 2 for 3 with a triple for Windward, which is 1-1 in the tournament.

Windward will play Chino Hills, Calif., and Los Alamitos, Calif., today.

Bronco (ages 11-12): Carlsbad, Calif., scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat 'Aiea, 12-11, yesterday on the first day of the West Zone Tournament at Olympia, Wash.

Carlsbad led 6-4 after four innings, but 'Aiea scored seven times in the fifth to take an 11-6 lead.

Three 'Aiea pitchers, however, couldn't hold the lead.

'Aiea's Troy Barboza-Scanlan batted 4 for 4 with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs, and Tyler Meditz, Kyle Tom and Brent Sakurai each had two RBIs.

'Aiea will play today at 5 p.m. (Hawai'i time).
