Advertiser Staff

A 33-year-old man critically injured in an early morning car crash Thursday on the Big Island died today at The Queen's Medical Center.

Big Island police identified the man as Joseph Theodore Herrold of Waimea.

According to Traffic Enforcement Unit investigator Sgt. Christopher Gali, Herrold was driving a 2004 Hyundai sedan that ran off the roadway and overturned at 2:27 a.m. Thursday on Route 190.

Herrold, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car. He was taken to North Hawai'i Community Hospital before being transported to Queen's.

Police believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors.

The death is the Big Island's 20th traffic fatality of the year as compared to 20 on the same date in 2006.
