Child, 5, escapes injury in Maili mobbing; 2 arrested

Advertiser Staff

A 5-year-old child seated in a car escaped serious injury Friday when a mob allegedly attacked the vehicle's adult occupants in Ma'ili.

Police responded to the incident on the 87-1600 block of Farrington Highway at 6:15 p.m.

A Ma'ili man, 32, was arrested for second-degree assault and first-degree criminal property damage while a Ma'ili woman, 20, was also arrested for first-degree criminal property damage.

Both were released yesterday at 4:43 p.m. pending further investigation.

According to police, two men, ages 25 and 31, fled from the car when the vehicle was surrounded by a large group of people. The men left the child in the car.

The man arrested allegedly repeatedly punched one of the victims, 25, and also hit him on the head and body with a small club, the complainants told police.

The suspect then used the club to break the rear window and strike the car. The shattered glass from the rear window fell on or around the child.

The woman was arrested for allegedly throwing a beer bottle through the rear window of the car but it missed the child.

Police are continuing their investigation for possible charges at a later date.
