Japan visitor dies after being rescued at Hanauma Bay

A 71-year-old visitor from Japan died at Straub Clinic & Hospital today after being brought to shore by lifeguards at Hanauma Bay.

The victim was identified by the Honolulu medical examiner's office as Michiko Nakajima of Tokyo.

Police have classified the case as an unattended death pending an autopsy tomorrow.

Police were notified at 12:30 p.m.

Lifeguards performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim until an ambulance arrived, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.
