Soccer: Ching helps lead Houston to draw in SuperLiga

Advertiser Staff

HOUSTON — Joseph Ngwenya scored an early goal and the Houston Dynamo earned a 1-1 tie with Monarcas Morelia on Sunday night in the SuperLiga.

Just moments after the opening kick, Houston made it 1-0 when Ngwenya took a pass from Kamehameha Schools alum Brian Ching and drew Morelia goalkeeper Moises Munoz out of position. Ngwenya then pushed his shot into the far corner.

Morelia tied the game in the 74th minute when Marcio Batista took advantage of a mistake by Houston goalkeeper Zach Wells. Wells failed to stop a bouncing pass and the ball came down to Batista, who fired a shot into the net.

Both teams, competing in Group B that also includes Club America and D.C. United, are 1-0-1 in the tournament with four points each.

The teams finish pool play on Wednesday as the Dynamo will host D.C. United and Morelia will play Club America in Chicago.

Even though Houston controlled the game early on, Morelia had several chances to tie.

The Mexican team's best opportunity came in the 15th minute when Fernando Arce nearly scored on a free kick from about 22 yards. But Wells, who normally backs up starter Pat Onstad, made the save to keep it 1-0.

Houston had chances to make it 2-0.

Ching had a good opportunity in the 24th minute. Ngwenya served a ball from the near corner and Ching sent a header toward the goal. Munoz got just enough to send the ball out of bounds setting up a corner.

One minute after Batista's score, the Dynamo nearly regained the lead, but a well-placed shot by Dwayne DeRosario was stopped by Munoz.

Munoz made five saves and Wells had two.
