Last week's story on what to do if you miss a connection or your flight is canceled brought excellent advice from reader Gary Kai. His ideas include buying a one-day pass to the executive lounge of the airline on which you are traveling (where you can shower and rest); packing quick-dry clothes and laundry detergent in your carry-on; calling your airline as soon as the flight is cancelled — it might be quicker to get them on the phone than it is to reach the front of the line to reschedule your flight.

And remember, he said, there's always someone worse off than you.

BIG ISLAND

ORCHIDS INVADE HILO AUG. 10-12

The Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium in Hilo is no stranger to excitement and competition. But next month's international event offers esprit of a different kind. An exotic army of blooms will envelop the downtown stadium for the 55th Annual Hilo Orchid Society Show & Sale.

"We use every space we can," said event coordinator Alice Moon, "for displays ranging from individual tabletop displays to those of commercial orchid growers."

Hundreds of award-winning orchids will compete for American Orchid Society awards; experts will offer demonstrations and tips, but most of all, enthusiasts are rewarded with a glimpse of some of the most breathtaking blooms.

And if showstoppers such as last year's grand champion, Cyc. herrenhusanum "Golden Rings" aren't enough, you can check out water gardens, rhododendrums and displays. Plus, of course, flower sales, pots, botanical prints and equipment.

"Our theme this year is 'An Orchid Feast,' " said Moon, who grew up in Hilo and has been fascinated by orchids all her life. "There are so many outstanding orchids this year, it's mindblowing and will truly be a feast."

The 55th Annual Hilo Orchid Society Show & Sale is Aug. 10-12. Admission by donation at the door.

A preview party on Aug. 9 aids Hospice of Hilo with pupu, wine and music among the orchids. Tickets: $50 at Basically Books, 808-933-9772 or amoon@bigisland.com.

TOP TEN

KIDS WILL LOVE OREGON AQUARIUM

Fins together for the Oregon Coast Aquarium, which made the "Best Aquariums for Kids in the U.S." top-10 list in the August issue of Parents magazine. It's noted for its natural setting, interactive displays, touch pool and Passages of the Deep, an exhibit that runs through a 200-foot underwater tunnel with live sharks, rays and skates. Also highlighted are the aquarium's educational programs, including its kayak tours and school lab programs. The aquarium is also listed among the top 10 aquariums by USA Today and Coastal Living.

"Our location (in Newport) is both an advantage and a challenge," said aquarium president Dale Schmidt. "The beautiful setting is a little off the beaten path, which makes it all the more incredible that we draw people from all over the world and receive national attention for the quality of our exhibits and educational programs."

Top honors went to Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, Calif. See the full fishy list at www.parents.com.
