Boy injured jumping into Wailuku River on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

An adolescent boy suffered minor injuries Sunday when he struck rocks while jumping into the Wailuku River at Boiling Pots Recreation Area on the Big Island.

The boy suffered injuries to his right wrist, forearm and right thigh when he tried to jump about 15 feet into the river but instead hit rocks on the way down, Big Island firefighters said.

The incident occurred on the Hamakua side of the river, about 150 yards west of Boiling Pots Lookout, firefighters said.

Friends used a makeshift flotation device and helped the boy swim back to the river bank. He was able to walk back up the trail to the lookout area, firefighters said.
