Interfaith program on Maui to mark Hiroshima bombing

Advertiser Staff

KAHULUI, Maui - Dr. Seiji Yamada will be the featured speaker at Monday's 20th annual interfaith peace program marking the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

Yamada, a physician born in Hiroshima, teaches at the University of Hawai'i's John A. Burns School of Medicine and has cared for survivors of nuclear testing in the Pacific. Event organizers said he will show slides and speak on the topic "of turning away from the path of nuclear weapons." The free event will start at 7 p.m. at the Kahului Hongwanji Buddhist Mission, 291 Pu'unene Ave.

Music, interfaith prayers, the lighting of candles and refreshments will follow Yamada's talk. This year's event is sponsored by Kahului Hongwanji and the Maui Interfaith-Community Peace Coalition, a group of churches and community peace activists.
