John Parkinson, who has experience in artistic administration and theatrical production management, is the new executive director Ballet Hawaii, succeeding Steve Knox, who is relocating to Oregon after two decades with the state's largest ballet company.

Parkinson most recently was artistic administrator for the Hawaii Opera Theatre but has previous leadership with Mainland dance groups.

With Ballet Hawaii prepping for an Aug. 11-12 production of "Cinderella" at Blaisdell Concert Hall, Parkinson said in a statement, "I'm looking forward to working with the board on a seamless transition in the weeks and months to come."

"We were impressed with John's background, which includes dance company production management for the Joffrey Ballet and Trisha Brown Dance Company," said Susan Schull, president of

Ballet Hawaii's board of directors, in a statement.

Parkinson also has served as a productionmanager or independent producer on more than 200 theatrical presentations, including Ballet Hawaii's "Nutcracker" on Maui and several Arts Alliance productions.

"I'm thrilled Ballet Hawaii has such a dynamic professional in place to ensure its ongoing success," said Knox.
