Resort gets major gift of koi

Advertiser Staff

The Aloha Koi Appreciation Society and Kodama Koi Farm donated 835 Japanese carp to the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa this month.

The donation was worth more than $68,000.

About 350 koi were added to the pond fronting the Ali'i Tower; the rest were put into the pond near the Rainbow Tower.

Nishikigoi is the national fish of Japan and is prized by collectors around the world.

These carp will be featured at an expo at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in November.

Koi symbolize perseverance, strength and courage. Their average life span is 25 to 35 years, though some have lived up to 200 years.

The Aloha Koi Appreciation Society was founded by former Gov. George Ariyoshi and Mamoru Kodama of Kodama Koi Farm.

The 835 koi join the existing 200 koi at the hotel, which boasts more than 30 species of wildlife including penguins, flamingos, sacred ibis and ducks.
