Improvements on the way for Ala Moana Health Center

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle released $217,000 for improvements to the Ala Moana Health Center today.

The project will include replacing the building's 20-year-old air-conditioning units and cooling tower, which will be more energy-efficient, Lingle said in a news release.

"This project is an example of how the state can lead by example to conserve energy," Lingle added.

Construction is slated to start in November and end in May 2008.

Total cost of the project is estimated at $287,000, of which $70,000 was allotted in fiscal year 2005 for design and construction consultation services.

The current air-conditioning system doesn't adequately cool the second floor of the building.

The Ala Moana Health Center houses various state Department of Health programs, including the Environmental Health Services Division (which monitors food, drugs, noise, radiation and indoor air quality and conducts restaurant inspections among other duties), the Women Infants and Children Services Branch and Bilingual Health Services.
