BUSINESS BRIEFS
More Northwest flights canceled

Advertiser Staff and News Services

DETROIT — Northwest Airlines' pattern of cancellations continued yesterday, with more than 200 flights dropped as pilots who were pushed to the limit of hours they are allowed to fly each month stayed home.

The airline blamed the pilots, who in turn blamed the airline for failing to address staff shortfalls after it canceled more than 2,000 flights in June, many of them toward the end of the month.

Northwest first blamed the weather but later said pilot absenteeism was the problem. Pilots say they are overworked and are flying the maximum 90 hours per month their contract allows.

NowPublic.com said more than 100,000 people from more than 140 countries have uploaded text, photos, video or audio to the site. The Associated Press began working with NowPublic earlier this year to obtain information, images and video from citizen journalists for distribution to news organizations.

RISE IN GOLD'S VALUE PREDICTED

SEATTLE — Gold may rebound on speculation that the dollar will resume a slide against the euro, boosting the appeal of the precious metal as an alternative investment.

Fourteen of 27 traders, investors and analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News from Sydney to Chicago on July 26 and July 27 advised buying gold, which fell 1.8 percent last week to $672.30 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The precious metal has climbed 5.4 percent this year, while the dollar has declined 3.4 percent against the euro.
