The Windward Community College newspaper Ka 'Ohana won a first-place national award from the American Scholastic Press Association, earning 960 points out of a possible 1,000 in its category.

The award includes a "special merit" designation for excelling in several areas such as content, page design, creativity and overall plan. Over the years, the paper has won 12 first-place awards, said Libby Young, adviser and journalism professor.

The paper is produced by journalism students. Working for the paper provides training for reporters, photographers, editors, desktop publishing, graphic design and Web production.
