Dow, S&P 500 rise to record closes

Wall Street advanced Friday, with investors optimistic about the state of the economy after data that showed solid job creation, renewed strength in manufacturing and easing inflation. Both the Dow Jones industrial average and Standard & Poor's 500 index rose to record closes.

  • The Dow rose 40.47, or 0.30 percent, to 13,668.11.

  • The S&P 500 index advanced 5.72, or 0.37 percent, to 1,536.34.

  • The Nasdaq composite index gained 9.40, or 0.36 percent, to 2,613.92.

    For the week:

  • The Dow is up 160.83, or 1.19 percent.

  • The S&P is up 20.61, or 1.36 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 56.73, or 2.22 percent.

    For the year:

  • The Dow is up 1,204.96, or 9.67 percent.

  • The S&P is up 118.04, or 8.32 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 198.63, or 8.22 percent.
