UH School of Social Work hosts indigenous conference

The University of Hawai'i School of Social Work will host the conference "Indigenous Voices in Social Work: Not Lost in Translation" at the Makaha Resort, June 4 – 7.

The conference will feature indigenous practitioners and researchers from Aotearoa, Ghana, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Canada, North America, Samoa, Fiji, Guam, Hawai'i, Malaysia, and the Philippines. They will share their expertise in indigenous practices in areas such as domestic violence, substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, and other social problems.

Speakers include Nainoa Thompson, a member of the school's board of advisers, who will give the Myron "Pinky" Thompson Memorial lecture, Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee Haunani Apoliona, the Rev. Kaleo Patterson, state Human Services director Lillian Koller, Poka Laenui, and many others.

The Montana Indian Hall of Fame Dance Troupe will participate in the cultural exchange and there will be a parade of nations, as well as a marketplace of indigenous arts and crafts.

Supporters and cosponsors include the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the Department of Human Services, the UH Center for Hawaiian Studies, Lampson International, the Univers Foundation, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the Hawai'i Medical Service Association , the Queen Lili'uokalani Childrens' Center, and the Volunteer Resource Center of Hawai'i.
