Big Isle police warn of Canada-based scam

Advertiser Staff

Big Island police are warning the public about a mail scam aimed at persuading Hawaii County residents to give away money.

A company calling itself "Meltec Financial Management" out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is sending a letter along with an enclosed cashier's check for more than $2,000. The letter claims that the recipient has won $50,000 and asks the recipient to cash the enclosed check and send it back to pay for "tax and administrative" expenses. The check is bogus.

Police ask anyone who receives a similar suspicious solicitation to call the Police Department's non-emergency number at 935-3311.
